The Role of Documentation in the Flex PCB Manufacturer

Documentation in the Flex PCB Manufacturer

When a new PCB design goes to the flex pcb manufacturer for production, there are certain documents that must be provided. This is to make sure that the fabrication and assembly processes will go smoothly and that the final product meets design standards. These documents will include the fab drawings, the Bill of Materials (BOM), and the design specifications. If any of these documents are missing, it will delay the production process and may result in missed deadlines.

The fab drawings for a flex circuit are different from those of a rigid pcb, as there are more layers to consider. This includes the insulating PI layer, which is used to separate copper layers from one another. The flex circuit also requires Microvias, which are laser-drilled holes that are plated through to make them conductive. They can be staggered or stacked to simulate the blind and buried vias that are common in regular rigid boards.

In addition to the insulating layer, a flex circuit must have a copper-based solder mask that is similar to the one on regular PCBs. It is essential that the PCB designer use this mask layer to define coverlay openings around the pads on the component footprint. This will allow the flex to be connected to the component without damaging the pads.

The BOM, or Bill of Materials, is a crucial document that lists all the components that will be used on the board. It can be generated by a number of CAD drawing programs, and it is important that the information entered is accurate. The more detailed the BOM is, the easier it will be for the flex pcb manufacturer to make a correct assembly.

The Role of Documentation in the Flex PCB Manufacturer

Besides the BOM, the fab drawing for a flex circuit must also contain detailed design information. It should show a complete breakdown of the layer stack, dimensions, flexibility, plating, marking, and testing requirements. Rigid and flex notes should be separated on the fab drawing to avoid confusion.

If the flex circuit is going to be continuously bent during operation, the flex pcb manufacturer will need to know how much flexing it needs to handle. This will help them choose the right thickness of insulating layer, copper type and density, and plating options. It is also a good idea to use S curves in the flex areas, as this will reduce the likelihood of the traces cracking under the stress.

Another key part of documentation is the etch and solder mask layers. A good fab house will be able to create a patterned etch and a smooth solder mask. The etch and solder mask should be free of cracks or bubbles, as this will improve the reliability of the finished product.

The fab and assembly processes for a flex or rigid-flex circuit are very different from those of a rigid PCB, so it is important to communicate with the fabricator throughout the project to ensure that the desired results are achieved. For example, a good fabrication shop will have the ability to use automated fluid dispensing, which will speed up the assembly process. This is a significant advantage over conventional manual methods, which can be time-consuming and expensive for large quantities of bare boards.
