Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu on Thursday stunned the second seed at the BWF World Championships, Wang Zhiyi, in straight games, to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Coming off two straight-game wins over unheralded opponents, Sindhu was the underdog against Wang, who was coming off a title triumph at the China Open last month.
The 15th-ranked Sindhu, who won the world title in Basel in 2019, needed 48 minutes to complete the victory over the 2024 Asian Championships gold medallist.
Sindhu, a five-time World Championships medallist, made a strong start with two sharp attacks to take the opening game 21-19, while Wang looked passive in her returns.
Sindhu maintained her momentum in the second game to seal the contest and extend her head-to-head record against Wang to 3-2.
